Podcaster Q&A
Tell us about yourself – what is your background?
Hey there I'm, Faith, an openly autistic author, podcaster, voice actress, director, and audiodrama creator! From a young age I was inspired by the world of what was formerly called "Radio Theater" from such productions like Narnia (by the BBC) or Louisa May alcott's Little Women to The Secret Garden, I was brought up on theatrical masterpieces such as the 1984 Into the Woods, and learned to love sound writing through Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde, C.S. Lwis, Tolkien, and Doyle's sherlock!
Why did you get into podcasting?
The pandemic! Surprise, surprise! Ode to the dark ages of 2020, in the wake of a severe depression, I was introduced to the world of Fiction podcasts and somehow, granted the opportunity to work with 50 voices from around the globe to make my very first show, Chaotic Idiots, and subsequently following it, I have produced at least three others, including a fan production of Narnia: The Silver Chair, Faithfully Yours Mozart, Interviewing Stephen Haggard, and Tir Na Noc: Brotherhood.
How did the idea for the show come about?
For Chaotic idiots? I fell into a deep depression during the pandemic. Life looked bleak and I needed something that was bright and colorful to fight some intense mental health waves. Chaotic idiots and the stories after it, i.e. Tir Na Noc, Mozart, and anything else I've done, were the result of fighting and clawing my way through some immense trials in my personal life, including grief and loss. My projects are often the result of facing difficult circumstances if I'm honest.
What do you hope listeners take from the show?
Hope. Empathy. Compassion. and most importantly, lessons on how to support those who are facing challenges they may not be brave enough to tackle alone. My heroes often face not a grand villain who is chasing them, though perhaps there is only ever one in Chaotic Idiots, but rather in most of my stories, the real truth is the heroes are facing themselves and facing battles within them that they need a helping hand to "not carry it for them" but to help "carry them" as I believe Samwise said.
What's been the biggest challenge for you?
Knowing that the audience is actually listening. I appreicate engagement and comments more than anything. I would love to see reviews, I'd love to see some traction with feedback, that has been my biggest challange is, I don't feel as if anyone is listening at all, and I've been at this for nine years. Any comments, any feedback, would be accepted with gratitude, make it genuine, kind, encouraging. Sure, the projects aren't perfect but it's also just me at the helm of everything.
How can your listeners support your show?
Well there is a link to a redbubble store with merch and some of my projects are multi-media so there are book versions of at least three of the projects, if you check out my website, it would be the greatest of help to make a purchase of any of the merch or the books or even just to subscribe to the youtube, follow the podcast's host site and leave reviews on places like podchaser, Imdb, goodreads, and more. That is the best you can do to help me as the head creative of all these projects.
Any future plans that you'd like to share?
Currently, I'm working on an audiodrama for my latest venture, Faithfully Yours Mozart: The Courtship. If you check out the website you can find the linktree for it and I would be pleased as punch if you could check out that project, it's got two Autistic Leads at its helm, we have five more episodes premiering next year and that's about all that's going on with me at the moment.
Anything else you'd like to share?
Be kind to the smaller, indie creators. Sometimes it's just one person helming the ship. And in this case that would be me, I've helmed this creative ship for the last nine years alone. It's been me casting, editing, marketing, I'm kind of multidisciplinary, so... if things are taking a while, I need all the kindness and encouragement you can lend, cause this journey is tough too. Rewarding, but tough and sometimes very lonely. Many thanks, -Faith
