Podcaster Q&A
Tell us about yourself – what is your background?
I’m a British media professional, former broadcaster and military public affairs specialist, now based in rural Bosnia and Herzegovina. I create podcasts, videos, and written stories about culture, travel, and everyday life in the Western Balkans, especially aiming to demystify this much misunderstood country of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which I call my home and share honest, conversational storytelling.
Why did you get into podcasting?
I got into podcasting because I believe audio storytelling is "The Theatre of the Mind". In fact radio was and still is, the thread through my whole life. After decades in broadcasting and media, I moved to rural Bosnia and realised there were voices and everyday moments the world rarely hears. Podcasting became the perfect way to share them. For me its now become a slow, honest, creative-retirement project that keeps me curious and connected.
How did the idea for the show come about?
"An Englishman in the Balkans " and latterly "Postcards from Bosnia" began simply as a way to share my life in rural Bosnia with my family in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. Over time, I realised people were genuinely curious about the region beyond the headlines. The podcast grew from that. A place to tell real stories, meet interesting people, and show what everyday life here is actually like, all through a slow-paced, personal lens.
What do you hope listeners take from the show?
I hope listeners come away with a clearer, more human picture of life in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider Balkans. Not the headlines, the real everyday moments, the culture, the humour, the people. If the show helps someone feel curious about this part of the world, or simply offers a gentle, reflective escape in their day, then I’ve done my job.
What's been the biggest challenge for you?
The biggest challenge has been keeping the podcast consistent while juggling life, projects, and the realities of living in rural Bosnia. Good stories take time, and I want each episode to feel honest and thoughtful. Balancing that with slow internet, travel, and the ups and downs of creative retirement can be tricky. But it’s always worth it.
How can your listeners support your show?
Listeners can support the show simply by following, rating, and sharing it with someone who might enjoy a different view of the Balkans. Their comments and messages genuinely help shape future episodes. And for those who want to go a step further, subscribing to my blog on Substack or Buying Me a Coffee keeps this creative-retirement storytelling project going.
Any future plans that you'd like to share?
I’m expanding the podcast with more interviews, deeper storytelling, and a new focus on life in Bosnia and Herzegovina as seen through the lens of creative retirement. I’m also developing narrative episodes, sound-rich travel pieces, and a companion project that highlights voices from across the Balkans. Lots of ideas brewing. All centred on slow living, culture, and honest stories from this corner of Europe.
Anything else you'd like to share?
Just a thank you, really. I’m grateful to everyone who listens, follows, and reaches out. This podcast began as a small experiment in creative retirement and has grown into a community of people curious about Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Balkans. If the stories make you smile, think, or feel connected, then it’s all worthwhile. And there’s plenty more to come.
