Colonoscopy is considered the gold standard for colorectal cancer screening because this procedure can not only detect precancerous colon polyps but can prevent colorectal cancer since the polyps are removed during colonoscopy. In order for the doctor to see the polyps, a clean colon is key. This is why it's so important that patients understand the steps of the bowel prep and follow their doctors' instructions.
