Some of the killers we’ve talked about had terrible childhoods filled with abuse and unimaginable grief. Some have convinced themselves that their potential gains, maybe money or protecting a secret, justify their crime. And while none of this justifies murder, it can helps us try to better make sense of a horrible tragedy. But there is no such motive or sympathetic backstory for the man who brutally killed Karen Buckley, a 24 year old Irish nurse and master’s student, who was enjoying a night out with friends in Glasgow in April 2015. As the judge said in his sentencing, Alexander Pacteau, was a “callous and calculating” murderer who took the life of a young woman who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

To an outsider, it might seem like there isn’t a lot going on in Lebanon, Missouri. There is a Route 66 museum, a Walmart, a bowling alley, and a few shops. It’s less than 15 square miles and has about 14,000 residents. But if current trends hold, there’s a 1 in 19 chance that you will be a victim of a violent crime, making it one of the most violent areas in the United States. undefined - What Happened to Jelani Day
What Happened to Jelani Day

November 10, 2021

24m

Jelani Day was such a dedicated student that when he didn’t show up for class on August 24th, 2021, his professor immediately knew something was wrong. Jelani Day was such a caring son that when his mother texted him, and he didn’t call her back right away to chat, Carmen Bolden Day knew that something had happened to her baby. When his body was found in the Illinois River in a town he had no connection to weeks after his disappearance, the police seemed content to label his death a suicide or an accident--but with the facts and evidence gathered, Carmen and the rest of Jelani’s family are sure that Jelani didn’t end up in the water of his own accord. How did a young Black man with so much promise and things to live for wind up in a river of a small town an hour away from his home?
