Herbert Richard Baumeister was one of four children and the oldest. He was born on April 7, 1947. His father, Dr. Herbert E. Baumeister, was an anesthesiologist, and his mother, Elizabeth Baumeister, was a homemaker. They provided a loving home with the essentials. However, Herbert, or Herb, as he's often called, exhibited early signs of troubled behavior. It’s often believed that his behavior was a red flag for what was to come.

Three family members, Voncile, Richard, and John Smith, were found beaten and bloodied and found under piles of clothes in the home. A police press conference was held with the shocking idea that this was the work of witchcraft, and what scared the community even more was that the killer was still at large, possibly looking for the next attack. When the media got their hands on the story, they got creative with their headlines, calling it the Blue Moon Murders or the Wiccan Sacrifice.
