The Clockwork Man by E. V. Odle audiobook.

Genre: scifi

On a quiet afternoon in the English village of Great Wymering, a cricket match is interrupted by the sudden appearance of a stranger who moves in jerks, speaks in odd staccato bursts, and seems to hum with hidden machinery. The players laugh at him at first - until his uncanny speed and strength turn the farce into something harder to explain. Local doctor Allingham wants a sensible answer (escaped lunatic, hoax, anything but the impossible), while the more imaginative Captain Gregg suspects the truth: the newcomer is part man, part mechanism, and profoundly out of place in time. Bank clerk Arthur Withers, gentler and more curious than the others, becomes the Clockwork Man's confidant, drawn in as the stranger reveals a device embedded in his skull - a clock that lets him perceive dimensions beyond ordinary reality, and that has malfunctioned, stranding him thousands of years from home. As Allingham and the villagers grapple with whether they can help him, two courtships unfold (Allingham with the sharp-minded Lillian Payne, Arthur with Rose Lomas), and the Clockwork Man's disturbing account of the future forces everyone to confront technology, gender, violence, and the true cost of a perfectly regulated life.

Some Experiences of an Irish R.M. by E. Oe. Somerville audiobook.

Genre: comedy

Some Experiences of an Irish R.M. follows the misadventures of Major Sinclair Yeates, an English ex-army officer who arrives in rural west Ireland to take up a post as a Resident Magistrate - a job that sounds orderly on paper but quickly becomes anything but. Thrown into a world of lively market towns, sprawling estates, and tight-knit communities where everyone seems to know everyone else (and where rules bend under the weight of custom), Yeates must learn how to dispense justice without becoming the butt of the joke. Along the way he is assisted, misled, and occasionally rescued by the formidable local police sergeant, the endlessly resourceful servants and neighbors, and a parade of eccentric characters whose schemes, feuds, and tall tales collide with official procedure. Told in crisp, comic episodes, the book delights in culture clash, social satire, and the gap between legal authority and real authority, while also revealing an affectionate eye for the landscape and the people who animate it. The central tension is Yeates's effort to keep his dignity and do his duty as each case turns into a riotous lesson in how Ireland works.

The Mystery of the Locks by E. W. Howe audiobook.

Genre: mystery

Davy's Bend was a dying, lonely, uncared-for river town. So when a stranger showed up one day and bought the old unoccupied house called 'The Locks' one dreary day, the inhabitants of the town were naturally very curious about the stranger, and very curious about his reasons for buying the old house. The Locks had been known for years to display at nighttime a single light showing up in one room, and there was one room in the house which was strictly off-limits to anyone. What was the history behind The Locks that nobody dared to talk about? What was the reason for the stranger's unannounced arrival and purchase of The Locks? Small, dying towns tend to keep their secrets to themselves, and Davy's Bend was no exception. Nor was the stranger's.
