Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad audiobook.

Genre: adventure

Set in a time of oppressive colonisation, when large areas of the world were still unknown to Europe, and Africa was literally on maps and minds as a mysterious shadow, Heart of Darkness famously explores the rituals of civilisation and barbarism, and the frighteningly fine line between them.

We get the tale through a classic unreliable narrator, relating as Marlow, a ship’s captain, tells how he was sent by the Company to retrieve the wayward Kurtz, and was shaken to discover the true depths of darkness in that creature’s, and in his own, soul. Conrad based the work closely on his own terrible experience in the Congo.

This work has been reinterpreted and adapted into many modern forms, the most well known being the film Apocalypse Now.

Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift audiobook.

Genre: adventure

Shipwrecked and cast far from home, Lemuel Gulliver - a practical English surgeon and sailor - begins a sequence of astonishing voyages that will test his assumptions about human nature, politics, and pride. He wakes to find himself a giant among the Lilliputians, a nation of miniature people whose petty rivalries and elaborate rules mirror the worst habits of the world he thought he knew. Later, he becomes the small one in a land of towering giants, where everyday life exposes the fragility of his own culture's values. Each new shore brings stranger customs, sharper dangers, and deeper questions, as Gulliver is pulled between curiosity and survival, diplomacy and outrage. Behind the marvels and misadventures lies a biting satire: courts obsessed with power, experts lost in useless projects, and societies that reveal how easily reason can be bent to vanity. As Gulliver struggles to remain loyal to his country and to his own sense of identity, the journeys push him toward uncomfortable self-knowledge. Clever, darkly funny, and endlessly inventive, Gulliver's Travels is both a fantastical adventure and a scathing look at what people choose to call civilization.

English Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs audiobook.

Genre: folklore

First published in the nineteenth century and gathered with a storyteller's ear, English Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs is a lively treasury of England's best-loved folk narratives. In these pages, ordinary boys and girls stumble into extraordinary tests, clever underdogs outwit giants and witches, and wandering heroes bargain with fate using little more than nerve, luck, and a sharp tongue. Familiar figures appear in fresh, fireside-told form: Jack trading for magic, Tom Thumb proving that small can be mighty, bold travelers braving haunted roads, and quick-witted tricksters turning danger back on those who threaten them. Each tale stands alone, yet together they paint a vivid portrait of a world where kindness is rewarded, greed is punished, and courage often arrives disguised as mischief. Jacobs, a pioneering folklorist, presents these stories with brisk pace and bright humor, preserving the rhythms of oral tradition while inviting modern listeners to hear the old adventures anew. Perfect for family listening or anyone drawn to timeless wonder, this collection celebrates imagination, resilience, and the enduring pull of the impossible.
