Genre: mystery
In Victorian England, Sybil Secretan is a gentlewoman with a precarious future: she has breeding and pride, but not the money that protects a woman from hard choices. When she is offered the post of housekeeper to her wealthy, eccentric uncle, the arrangement seems like salvation. In a comfortable household, treated with unexpected kindness, Sybil can finally imagine security, and the unspoken promise of inheritance begins to shape every plan she makes. But a new attachment pulls her off the safe path. Drawn to a man whose charm masks danger, Sybil discovers how quickly romance can become a liability in a world that judges women by rumor and outcome. When her uncle suddenly sickens and dies under suspicious circumstances, whispered accusations harden into public scrutiny, and Sybil finds herself trapped between loyalty, fear, and the need to protect her name. As questions tighten around the household and hidden motives surface among family and neighbors, Sybil must navigate deception, shifting alliances, and the brutal arithmetic of money and reputation to learn what truly happened and whether innocence can be proven once doubt takes hold.

Boy, The Wandering Dog by Marshall Saunders audiobook.
Genre: adventure
Told with wit, grit, and a keen eye for human folly, 'Boy, The Wandering Dog' follows Boy, a bold fox-terrier with a mind of his own, as he tries to make his place in a city that can be thrilling one moment and merciless the next. Newly arrived in New York after a stretch of roaming, Boy quickly learns that a dog survives on more than luck: he needs allies, street sense, and a clear set of rules for navigating parks, apartment houses, and the shifting politics of the local dog world. Along the way he meets hard-bitten veterans of city life, forms uneasy friendships, and discovers just how easily a dog can be misunderstood, exploited, or stolen when people see animals as property instead of companions. As Boy is drawn into rescues, close calls, and unexpected detours beyond the city streets, his adventures become a test of loyalty and identity: Is he a wanderer by nature, or a devoted home-dog fighting to return to the life he chose? Marshall Saunders blends heart, humor, and social conscience into a fast-moving animal tale about belonging, courage, and the price of freedom.

Alice of Old Vincennes by Maurice Thompson audiobook.
Genre: history
This entertaining book of adventure, love and war was a Bestseller in 1900 and 1901. The heroine Alice Roussillon is a brave young woman who grew up in a small town on the Wabash River in Indiana during the revolutionary war. The characters are all distinctive and compelling. It gives a great insight into the frontier life of that era and includes true historical accounts and personages such as the wicked Lieutenant Governor Henry Hamilton and George Rogers Clarke who was responsible for expelling the British from Fort Sackville in Vincennes in 1779. From the foreword: ' 'Accept, then, this book, which to those who care only for history will seem but an idle romance, while to the lovers of romance it may look strangely like the mustiest history.'
