My name is Oliver Laurence,
I spent over twelve years as a police officer serving in some of the harshest environments Australia has to offer, now working as a Senior Investigator - Security, Intelligence and Crisis Management expert in London, I’ve had the chance to meet and speak with some of the men and women of law enforcement who found themselves at the frontline of the world’s most infamous investigations.
I'll chat with the men and women on the front line of events such as 9/11 to the investigation into Jimmy Saville, taking down the 'Teflon Don' John Gotti and even having to pull the trigger to stop a terrorist on a murderous rampage on the streets of London.
I’ll sit down with these brave men and women to hear their first-hand accounts of these events and how they got there.
Welcome to Protect and Serve

The Line Up was a hard-boiled drama of police action. Like Dragnet, it realistically showed police doing their jobs. Unlike Dragnet, it was not based on “cases taken from police files.” Rather The Line Up made its fictional cases seem realistic, from kidnappings and murders to thefts and obscene phone calls. The Line Up radio show was not set in any particular city. However, when the series moved to television, it was set in San Francisco.
The series starred William Johnston as Lieutenant Ben Guthrie and began with Wally Maher playing the role of Sergeant Matt Grebb. After Maher's passing in 1951, Jack Moyles took over the supporting role as Sergeant Pete Karger.
The Line Up, as the title indicates, centered around the police line up. The show always began with one. The Sergeant in charge of line would say, “May I have your attention please? You people on the other side of the wire in the audience room, may I have your attention please.” He would then give his name and say, “I’ll explain the line up to you. Each of the suspects you will see will be numbered. I’ll call out their number, their name, and charge. If you have any questions or identifications, please remember the number assigned to the prisoner as I call his name. At the end of each line when I ask for questions or identifications, call out the number. If you’re sure or not too sure of the suspect, have him held. The officers who took your name will assist you, they’re seated among you. Please be prompt with your questions or identifications. When the prisoners leave here, they are sent to the washroom and dressed back into their jail clothes. It makes it quite difficult to bring them back after they leave here. The questions I ask these suspects are merely to get a natural tone of voice so do not pay too much attention to their answers as they often lie. Bring on the line.
”While the line up was rarely the key to solving the case, it did give the show a rhythm and it also allowed for humor in the interrogation of the suspects by the sergeant. The series began as a Summer Replacement for The FBI in Peace and War in 1950, but quickly got its own time slot and would remain on radio until the Spring of 1953 before becoming TV only.

I served with Essex Police for 30 years, a chapter of my life filled with both haunting memories and exhilarating moments. Throughout my career, I had the privilege of interviewing a number of high-profile suspects—each encounter a vivid snapshot of human nature, revealing both darkness and resilience. The aim of this podcast is to delve deeper into the lives of former members of the Police and Military from across the globe. This is not just a collection of stories; it's a tribute to the extraordinary journeys of these remarkable individuals, often overlooked but never forgotten. Our contributors hail from diverse backgrounds, each with a unique story etched into the fabric of history. Picture this: a soldier landing on the Normandy beaches, adrenaline pumping in a chaotic backdrop, recounting the camaraderie that emerged amidst the chaos. Or a military operative sharing a heart-stopping tale of survival after being shot by the Taliban, offering insights into not just the battles fought but the battles within. We’ll hear from the man who carried the radio at the 1966 World Cup Final, a moment that united a nation, and the manager of the mortuary following the devastating 7/7 bombings, who witnessed humanity at its most fragile. These men and women are heroes of our time, and their stories are committed to this podcast for eternity! But there is also a narrative of transition—stories that weave through the fabric of public service into new realms of entrepreneurship and creativity. From authors penning the tales of their experiences to innovators launching successful businesses, the contributions of Police and Military personnel extend far beyond their uniforms. They are not one-dimensional figures; they are multifaceted individuals, and you will be amazed at the diverse lives they lead following their honorable careers. With each episode, we aim to illuminate the profound impact these experiences have had on their paths. If you have a Police or Military background and would like to take part in this enriching journey, I invite you to connect with us. Please email admin@ex-job.co.uk. Your story, like so many others, deserves a platform to be shared and celebrated. Join us as we explore courage, resilience, and the unbreakable human spirit, one story at a time. Together, we will honor these incredible journeys that shape not just the individuals but the very essence of our society.

Now here's a few words from our hosts...
Marlon is a 25-year Los Angeles Police Department veteran and has over 12 years of
Police Misconduct Investigation, adjudication, and examination experience. Much of his experience comes from when Marlon was assigned to Internal Affairs (IA) in a
prosecutorial role, representing the Chief of Police conducting Board of Rights, a unique Tribunal Hearing (the only agency with such a process in the nation). The numerous cases he tried involved “False & Misleading” allegations and termination was at issue.
However, Marlon has also been assigned to Officer Representation Section (ORS)
defending, representing the rank and file in Skelly Responses and most important,
during the administrative process in an OIS or other critical incidents. Marlon ensured IA Investigators were not violating the Peace Officer Bill of Rights Act (POBRA).
Nevertheless, because of his experience, he was hired as an Instructor by Savage
Training Group.
Marlon’s passion for discipline came early in his career when he was preparing cases
for Court Marshals & Non-Judiciary Punishment (aka: Captain’s Mast) when he was in active duty in the U.S. Navy back in 1995. After joining the LAPD in July 1998, working as a patrol officer, then promoted to Sergeant in January 2007, his passion was reenergized when he was chosen to work ORS and IA.
Marlon possesses a Juris Doctorate from Pacific Coast University, School of Law and
was going to become a full time Police Attorney until he was offered a recent promotion to continue his law enforcement career. Meanwhile, Marlon has been retained as a Subject Matter Expert and will continue to share his knowledge with listeners, students, everything there is to know about IA investigations, which he considers a very untapped subject matter.
